ACTIVITIES

Energy transition, climate protection and structural change are currently at the top of the agenda in any economic analysis of economic areas in Germany and globally.

In this context, and at the heart of the activities of the Regional Society for Education, Research and Skills Development, the question of how the Mansfeld region can be strengthened economically in the long term was therefore raised at a very early stage. Can the existing more or less untapped potential of the traditional mining region help to overcome the structural weakness that has persisted since the closure of the mining and smelting operations?

With this approach, both the geothermal potential of the tunnel waters of the Mansfeld copper mine and the flooded areas of the former mining areas are analyzed and investigated with regard to their energetic suitability for the generation and storage of heat/cold and green electricity.

Other key topics include the residue-free industrial utilization of waste products from copper mining and smelting processes as well as the geological assessment of unmined copper deposits in the region.

The solution to the issues identified is intended to contribute to the development of Mansfelder Land into a model region for renewable energy.
