QUO VADIS MANSFELD - Harnessing the potential of the Mansfeld region!

This task was the focus of the LEADER / CLLD project "Quo vadis Mansfeld". The aim was to identify ways of overcoming structural weaknesses in the Mansfeld-Südharz district following the closure of the Mansfeld copper mining and smelting operations in 1990.

On the initiative of RBFK e.V. Regionalgesellschaft für Bildung, Forschung und Kompetenzentwicklung - funded by the European Social Fund - local stakeholders have forged a powerful alliance with great commitment.

Under the leadership of Dr. sc. Lutz Koch, renowned scientists from MLU Halle-Wittenberg, TU Clausthal Zellerfeld and the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau have been working together with experts from the former Mansfeld combine and MANSFELD AG in recent years on forward-looking solutions to help the region gain new economic strength. 

The results are summarized in this book: The authors first looked at the previously unmined copper deposits in the Mansfeld region, the waste products from copper mining and smelting that they believe can be used industrially and the possibilities for using the geothermal potential of the mine water to generate energy.

This is followed by an assessment of the current state of science and technology as well as possible processes for the intended industrial use of the resources mentioned. Based on this, recommendations for action are formulated for politics, science and industry for medium and long-term use and economic exploitation.
