City Park to Become a Community and Energy Park

Project Overview:
South of Eisleben’s Old Town lies a 10.4-hectare, historically protected city park between the train station and the Stadtparkviertel neighborhood, surrounded by buildings from the Gründerzeit era. The park is currently in dire need of renovation: worn-out paths, a lack of accessibility, and inadequate lighting result in low usage by local residents.

At the same time, the park offers potential for historic preservation, community involvement, climate protection measures, and renewable energy generation—particularly geothermal energy.

The goal of the project is to identify these opportunities as part of a feasibility study and to develop a conceptual framework for them—in cooperation between Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and Lutherstadt Eisleben.

Project Objectives:

• Conceptual Redevelopment: Transforming the city park into a forward-looking community and energy park.
• Key topics: Historic preservation, traditional park use, climate adaptation, intergenerational civic engagement, and renewable energy, particularly geothermal energy.
• Synergies: Linking historic preservation, biodiversity, and climate protection according to the principles of the New European Bauhaus (“beautiful, sustainable, together”)
• Citizen participation: A co-creative process that fosters a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for the park’s upkeep and long-term preservation.
