Launch of the innovative "Mining Memory" project - a digital archive for mining and geological cultural heritage

Eisleben, 24.11.2025 - It is with great pleasure that our association announces the official launch of the pioneering "Mining Memory" project. The aim of this project is to permanently preserve the rich mining and geological heritage of the Mansfeld-Südharz region and neighboring areas, to document it scientifically and to make it accessible to the public.

The "Mining Memory" brings together expertise from science, research and private collections from the fields of geosciences and mining. The aim is to create a comprehensive collection of important objects such as showpieces, drill cores, minerals and historical documents. Many of these objects originate from deposits that are no longer accessible today and are therefore considered unique evidence of the geological history of the region. Digitization will secure these valuable testimonies in the long term and preserve them for posterity.

The archive will contain an extensive database that describes objects in detail and enables simple and precise queries using modern search criteria. An innovative online platform will allow users to view the objects in 2D and 3D visualizations, call up multilingual descriptions and thus experience the mining and geological heritage of our region up close. The project is deliberately designed to be barrier-free so that people of all ages and backgrounds have unrestricted access - whether for educational purposes, scientific research or simply out of personal interest.

The project is designed to run for two years and is in the funding phase as part of the European Social Fund ESF+. It is classified under funding categories 2.5 and 2.6, which particularly promote the digitization, preservation and communication of cultural heritage.

With this project, we are sending a strong signal for the preservation of our mining and geological heritage - digitally, accessible and for everyone.
