LARA ALMARCEGUI at RBFK e.V. in Mansfelder Land

In December 2024, Spanish-born artist Lara Almarcegui, who lives in the Netherlands, visited the traditional Mansfeld region with its numerous legacies of copper mining and smelting operations.

In her projects, the artist addresses the social transformation processes in building, housing and urban development as a result of political, social and economic changes.

Since the mid-1990s, she has focused her attention on urban and anthropogenic conditions that are not usually the primary focus of social and human perceptions.

Lara Almarcegui often works in outdoor spaces in her projects and collects and bundles historical, geographical, ecological and industrial facts about derelict land and anthropogenic deposits and makes them available to the public.

Contributions by Lara Almarcegui at the exhibition "Planetary Farmers" from 23.05.-14.09.2025 in the Moritzburg in Halle/Saale

The exhibition “Planetary Peasants” is dedicated to the global and local dimensions of soil, land use and agriculture in the context of social and ecological transformation processes. Spanish artist Lara Almarcegui questions fundamental questions: What is soil, what lies beneath it and who owns the rights to use it? For “Planetary Farmers”, Lara worked closely with the Regional Society for Education, Research and Skills Development (RBFK) to determine the total volume of all industrial mining dumps in Germany. She poses the speculative question of the extent to which these volumes of mining residue could be used as new 'Almende' — communally used resources — for agriculture. This interdisciplinary collaboration combines artistic reflection with geoscientific expertise and opens up new perspectives on sustainable land use in the age of global environmental change.
